The 1985 NBMXA British Championships at Derby Greyhound Stadium. Politics came into full effect here, as UKBMX decided to run a National in Exeter the same weekend, meaning riders had to choose between the two events.
The only positive was that the Pros were able to race Exeter on Sunday, then head up the motorway to Derby that night and race the British Championships on Monday, which was a Bank Holiday.
Still, Derby had 1,200 riders despite the clash, and even though many of the big factory names were in Exeter, it once again opened the door, much like the 1984 British Championships, for new names to shine. One of these was Tim O’Shea, who had spent time in the States and took a double in 17+ and 16+ Cruiser.
In the Pro class, Pete Middleton took the overall win (£325) across the three finals, staying consistent all day. Geth Shooter went 1, 1, 6 in the finals, but it was not enough to beat a consistent Pete Middleton, who added another major British win to his already impressive CV. Geth still picked up an additional £250 for the 1985 NBMXA Overall Series.
