40 years ago, in 1986, Slough, England, hosted the IBMXF World Championships. It’s an event we’ve documented in the past and one we plan to celebrate at this year’s British BMX Hall of Fame on November 7th at Donington Park Farmhouse.
Another landmark came 10 years later. From August 16th to 18th, 1996, exactly 30 years ago this week, the World Championships returned to our shores for the second time, this time in Brighton.
Both Slough and Brighton were successful and memorable weekends.
Pictured here is Scott Beaumont, who 30 years ago this week won his second World Championship title. A year earlier, Scott had won the 17 Expert class at the 1995 World Championships in Colombia. Then, a year later in Brighton, he added his second World title, winning Junior Cruiser.
Scott is still winning today, already locking up another National BMX title this year and going for a couple more Mountain Bike National Championships this weekend at the Cannondale Malverns Classic. Scott continues to make British history on both bikes.
Photographer Geoff Waugh shot photos at Brighton 30 years ago and recently returned to the location to photograph how the Brighton Worlds track looks today. He’s documented both the original event and his return to the site on his website. Definitely worth checking out.
