1982 marked the second year of official National rankings in the UK. Cain Ali of Bradford Bandits BMX Club, riding for Cobra, a regular feature in early issues of BMX News and BMX Weekly, became UKBMX National Number 1 in the 5 year old class, putting his name in the history books alongside riders like Tim March, Andy Ruffell, Craig Schofield, Wayne Llewellyn, and Sarah-Jane Nichols as National Number 1s for 1982.
You might also recognise who finished National Number 2 behind Cain that same year, the future three time World Champion and British BMX Hall of Fame 2022 inductee, David Maw.
We will share more on Cain as we continue to document not only the established names of British BMX history, but also the younger riders of the time, many of whom do not always get the credit they deserve for what they achieved.
