1982 marked the second year of official National rankings in the UK. Cain Ali (Bradford Bandits BMX Club, riding for Cobra), a regular feature in BMX News and BMX Weekly early issues, became UKBMX National Number 1 in the 5-year-old class, putting his name in the history books alongside riders like Tim March, Andy Ruffell, Craig Schofield, Wayne Llewellyn, and Sarah-Jane Nichols as National Number 1s for 1982.You might also recognize who finished National Number 2 behind Cain that same year—the future 3-time World Champion and British BMX Hall of Fame (2022) inductee, Mr. David Maw.We’ll share more on Cain later down the road as we continue to document not only the established names of British BMX history, but also the younger riders of the time—many of whom don’t always get the credit they deserve for what they achieved.
