Congratulations to Lisa Wright! Inducted into The British BMX Hall of Fame Class of 2022 – Female Racer  

Lisa Wright came onto the scene in 1983 with a third place finish at her first National outing at Teesside Airport. By 1984, she was fully on the UKBMX circuit, riding for Johnson’s Jets, and in her first full year, Lisa racked up multiple National wins.

By 1985, Lisa had figured it all out, and the titles in both associations started pouring in. She won every major title available in the UK. Lisa secured multiple National titles in both UKBMX and NBMXA, along with British Championships, and was the winner of the Champion of Champions title. She also competed in the Kellogg’s Series, finishing seventh overall despite being the youngest girl in the class at the time.

Lisa transitioned into international racing with a sixth place finish at the 1985 Barcelona European Championships, a fifth in Germany the following year, and a third place finish in Belgium the year after that. She also placed seventh at the 1987 Orlando World Championships.

Team wise, after Johnson’s Jets, Lisa rode for Yes and GT, eventually joining the all star UK team of the late 80s and early 90s, Titan, alongside riders like Stephen and Martin Murray, Brad Anderson, Marc Thompson, Neal Wood, Jamie Staff, Adele Croxon, and Dylan Clayton, just to name a few.

By 1988 and 1989, Lisa had moved into the older age categories. Unfortunately, Sarah Jane Nichols and a few of the early 80s girls had recently retired, so we never saw Lisa and Sarah Jane go head to head.

Lisa stepped up immediately, winning the 1988 FIAC World Championships in Belgium, earning a podium spot at Bercy, securing second place at the 1990 Paul Ricard IBMXF World Championships, and third at the 1991 European Championships. Domestically, she had fierce battles with Luli Adeyemo and Julie Woodward, and internationally with Corine Dorland, as she moved into the 90s.

Lisa continued winning until the start of the 1992 season when, unfortunately, she had to retire due to her father being unwell, leaving her without a way to get to the races. She retired at the Derby National, but she left her mark on the sport during her nearly ten year career.
