Congratulations to Jamie Staff! Inducted into the British BMX Hall of Fame Class of 2024, Male Racer Category
Jamie Staff will go down in British Cycling history as one of the few riders who won World Championships in multiple cycling disciplines.
Jamie, from Ashford in Kent, burst onto the UK BMX national scene in 1984 when BMX was booming. He was quickly picked up to ride for the prestigious Raleigh Factory Team alongside notable established British and national champions such as Craig Schofield, Martin Jose, and Brad Smith.
In the following years, Jamie battled with the likes of Danny Stabielli, Lee Pickstone, and Joe Eastwood—just to name a few—during his amateur years. They all shared not just national titles but also became European champions, with Jamie winning it in 1989.
Team-wise, Jamie rode for SE, Boss, Hotshot, Titan, Webco, and later Haro and GT stateside.
In 1990, Jamie capped his amateur career by placing third at the IBMXF World Championships in France, behind Christophe Leveque and David Milham, and he turned professional shortly after.
Over the next few years, Jamie, Dale Holmes, Neal Wood, and Dylan Clayton all battled for Superclass wins and number one plates, not just in the UK but in Europe as well. After another third place at the 1995 Worlds in Colombia, winning the ’95 European Championships and the inaugural UCI World Cup event, Jamie packed his bags and moved to California at the end of the ’95 season.
Upon arrival in Huntington Beach, Jamie was picked up by Haro and went on to have a stellar professional career, including winning the UCI World Cup in ’96, the Elite Cruiser title at the ’96 Brighton World Championships, and later becoming the US NBL Pro Champion in 2001. Jamie also competed in the Vans Triple Crown downhill series and the X-Games BMX downhill race.
After winning the NBL title, Jamie transitioned to track cycling, and, like in BMX, the medals and titles followed soon after. He won Commonwealth Games medals and became World Champion in the Team Sprint, also earning a rainbow jersey in the Keirin.
Jamie was also part of the team that won the Olympic Sprint Gold in 2008 with Chris Hoy and Jason Kenny, earning him a MBE.
After seven years on the track, he turned to coaching. At the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, under Staff’s direction, USA Cycling’s BMX program won its first gold medal with Connor Fields. With the introduction of BMX Freestyle to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic schedule, Staff took over that program, which won its first medal in the sport’s debut, taking home silver.
