Congratulations to Stuart ‘Pepi’ Winder! Inducted into the British BMX Hall of Fame Class of 2025 – Pioneer Freestyle

Stuart Winder, anyone know why he was called Pepi? Pepi, from the mean streets of Carlisle, burst onto the national scene after a few early freestyle contests and then his showing at BMX Beat, where he pretty much became a household name. Random kids at school who didn’t even own BMX bikes knew the name Pepi. He had an instant charisma and magnetism to him, which made him hard to forget. That, and the fact that he seemed fearless and ripped on a BMX more than most around that time. This guy seemed to thrive when the eyes were on him at a contest or demo.

Of course a guy with this much energy was bound to come up with a few tricks of his own, and Pepi is credited with being the owner of the Candy Bar air, a trick people still do today. Pepi went from Ammaco to Vincent, where he became a mainstay in the BMX magazines of that era. Tours, contests, magazines and magazine covers and interviews were all commonplace for this guy.

RIP Stuart ‘Pepi’ Winder — you are sorely missed.
